Scientists Are Trying To Build A Human Heart By 3D Printing It

Posted on 05:02 by

All the buzz around 3D printing has yielded a very interesting undertaking by a team of scientists at the Univerity of Lousville in Kentucky.

The team of researchers are busily trying to leverage the technology to construct a human heart. Of course, this is not entirely groundbreaking. Scientists have used similar technology in the past to create splints, valves and an entire human ear.
Yet, this undertaking is the most elaborate to date and, if successful, could produce the first ever “bioficial heart.”
Dr. Anthony Atala, who practices at Wake Forest University and has experience with 3D synthesis, said,
“With complex organs such as the kidney and heart, a major challenge is being able to provide the structure with enough oxygen to survive until it can integrate with the body.”
Challenges or none, this is a huge leap in the field of medical advancement.
