Crime warning: Brazil cops have warned fans not to display valuable items like iPads or
jewellery Brazil cops have given a chilling warning to England fans ahead of the World Cup , telling them "don't scream if you're robbed."
The tips will be passed on to tourists in a pamphlet for those going to support their national sides in the major tournament in June.
Security bosses believe if fans "do not react, scream or argue," then they will not provoke robbers into further violence.
Police warned tourists about an increasing crime on the streets of Brazil known as "latrocinios",
meaning a robbery that ends in murder.
Fans were also advised not to flaunt valuable objects such as iPads, mobile phones or
jewellery, that may attract robbers and provoke them into violence.
Mario Leite, head of Sao Paulo World Cup security, told the BBC:
"Tourists come mainly from Europe and the United States, where they
do not see this crime very often."
The country already has one of the world's highest murder rates with UN officials saying 25.2 are killed per 100,000 people.
But violence and robberies are not the first problem the authorities are having to deal with in Brazil.
This week the eighth worker was killed as the country rushed to get its 2014 stadiums ready in
time.
Muhammad-Ali Maciel Afonso had been installing a telecoms network at the Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba when he was electrocuted.
He is the eighth person to die while working on World Cup stadiums as Brazil rushes to be ready for the tournament’s June 12th kick-off.
Rosenil Moraes, head of Cuiaba city emergency services, said the man died of a heart attack half
an hour after the incident.
Mr Moraes said paramedics tried to revive Mr Afonso at the stadium, which was built specially for the World Cup, but were unsuccessful.
