If he had gotten a job from the course
he had trained for, maybe Isaac would
be spending his day at road
construction work sites.
He was training as a civil engineering
at the Kenya Polytechnic and was
already hustling to pay fees.
He decided to make money first before
going back for further studies. But his
choice of a clothes importation
business from Uganda didn’t just sort
his financial mess. Sooner than later,
he realized his four year regular
travelling never saved him any money.
He quit.
He turned to simpler options and that
is how he landed in onion farming—
after his mother encouraged him. Yes,
it was a master stroke. After an initial
loan advance from a friend of Sh
36,000, Isaac put up an onion farm
and opted for the highly productive
Jambar variety.
He put up a nursery and his mum, a
local farmer, had useful tips on
tending to the crop. 9 Months later, he
started reaping the fruits of his new
venture. His initial 0.6 acre of land
produced 13 tonnes of onion which he
sold at a cool Sh 520,000! It was the
largest amount of money he had laid
his hands on.
This month, at 28 years, Isaac’s world
of onions has expanded. He now has
an acre of the garlic crop which he
estimates will produce 10 tonnes. With
a market value of about Sh 200, the
trained engineer will rake in about Sh
2 million…Still, an onion crop is now at
the nursery and soon he will
transplant them.
Isaac, an active member of Mkulima
Young is on the verge of making his
first million shillings—and all this
because he dropped his pride and
turned to farming. Another digital
farmer with his agribusiness world
wide open.
