K’naan, who is a divorced father of two, is no stranger to controversy. At the height of the piracy menace on Indian Ocean waters, K'naan surprised the world when he came out in defence of the Somali pirates.
Through his music and press appearances, he argued that the pirates were a misunderstood lot and not the criminals who had infested the Indian Ocean, violently taking ships and crew hostage and demanding hefty ransoms for their release and making the East African waters the most dangerous in the world.
K’naan argued that the pirates were rendering an essential service to the region by ridding the regions of opportunists who had taken advantage of Somalia’s lawlessness to dump toxic waste and deplete
fish reserves, destroying the livelihoods of millions in the process.
Prior to her confession, the couple had been spotted together, causing speculation of a romance between the two.
Unconfirmed reports had previously linked her to Jared Leto, who also took home an Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in Dallas Buyers Club .
