, pampered World Cup footballers
were revealed yesterday – and they are enough to drive a Brazilian hotelier bananas.
Algerians want the Koran by their bedsides. The English won’t go
anywhere without Jaffa Cakes and the Uruguayans have insisted on silent
air conditioning – so they have a “peaceful and quiet environment”.
The Dutch like to see their families and loved ones in the nervy
build-up to matches, while Ecuador are having daily deliveries of local
bananas.
Australia want their own coffee machines, and Bosnia have a sound-proof screen to keep team talks top secret.
With just 22 days to the kick off on June 12, preparations are well
under way to welcome 736 of the world’s best players to the spiritual
home of the beautiful game.
“They asked us to buy two types of liquid soap, one for showering and
the other to wash their hands,” said Luciana Marotta Guimaraes, JP
Hotel’s general manager.
With typical Teutonic efficiency, meanwhile, the Germans are putting
finishing touches to by far the most extravagant preparations.
Building their own training facility in remote Santo Andre, Bahia,
coach Joachim Loew will have 13 houses, 65 rooms, a football field and
treatment facilities at his disposal as he plans World Cup domination.
Thanks to a multi-million sponsorship deal with key backers such as
Mercedes, the Germans will have “homes from home” for players and
backroom staff.
But the nearest town is Porto Seguro, 20 miles away.
By comparison,
Roy Hodgson’s England squad
is making very few demands.
The team traditionally travels with home comforts such as baked beans and Jaffa Cakes, and Brazil will be no exception.
Preparations are meticulous, with high-carb meals, peanut energy
balls, re-hydration drinks, oat cakes, English mustard, organic
chocolate and herbal tea included on team menus.
George Durante, general manager of the Royal Tulip Hotel, in Rio, stressed Roy was keeping it simple.
“They’ve only asked us to set aside one of our three restaurants for
their exclusive use,” he said. “We will give the footballers a dedicated
video games room with three TVs and the latest games.
“And they want the sole use of the gym and pool for just several hours every day.”
Two floors of 64 rooms have been reserved at the Sao Conrado hotel.
“We’ve gutted all their rooms and we’re installing new furniture,
beds, wooden floors, rust-free balconies and air conditioning,” added Mr
Durante. “We’ve spent more than £2million.”
Their Group D rivals Uruguay, based at the JN Resort in Sete Lagoas,
will be hoping for some good nights’ sleep with their super quiet air
conditioning.
Ibrahim Lana, of the Hotel Ilha do Boi in Vitaria, Espirito Santos,
where Australia will stay, said Brazilian red meat, fish and chicken
will be part of their game plan.
He added: “We’ve also been asked to install coffee machines for four players,” he added. It’s enough to make a diva blush.”
Bosnia, in their first World Cup, and favourites Argentina are trying to stay calm before the storm.
“They’ve asked us to install an acoustic sound-proofed screen,” said
Lourival Pierim of Casa Grande Hotel Resort & Spa in Guaruja, Sao
Paulo, where Bosnia will be based.
He added: “The players will dine on one side and coaching staff on the other. “Their chatter will not be mixed.”
Argentina will use a state-of-the art complex at Belo Horizonte, in Minas Gerais, with its own training pitches.
“We are very excited to have superstars like Lionel Messi staying with us,” said a spokeswoman for the host city.
“They will be very welcome here and the setting is perfect.”
