The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

Nearly all efforts to cope with climate change focus on either mitigation for reducing emissions or on adaptation for adjusting to changes in climate. Although, it is imperative to continue with these efforts, the on-going pace of climate change and the slow international response suggests that a third option is becoming increasingly important: To protect the population against the immediate threat and consequences of climate-related extreme events, including heat waves, forest fires, floods and droughts, by providing it with timely, reliable and actionable warnings.
Although great strides have been made in developing climate-related warning systems over the past few years; most of the available systems are characterized with a variety of shortcomings – including problems with coverage and communication. The goal of this particular project, CLIM-WARN, is to carry out case studies to gather fundamental information needed for designing improved early warning systems, and then work with stakeholders to design such a system.
We are currently working with partners in Kenya, Ghana and Burkina Faso collecting data on hazards of relevance, trusted communication methods and sources of information. The intern will help enter and analysis this data to produce field work findings, and report back to partners.
The UNEP Division of Early warning and Assessment (DEWA), internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer, the intern will:
1. Assist in entering field data and analyzing it
2. Drafting reports
3. Any other duties as assigned

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
be enrolled in:
a. be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Studies in statistics, environmental studies or related courses. Background in Journalism is also welcome. Knowledge of statistical software such as SPSS or R desirable.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
